WASAC HANDED OVER MODEL LATRINES TO SCHOOLS IN 4 DISTRICTS

WASAC in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDDB) has initiated a project of constructing model latrines for schools in the four provinces of Rwanda. The project is implemented in two (2) phases: Phase I consists of construction of 4 model latrines in 4 districts whereas Phase II consists of construction of 10 model latrines in 10 districts.  Each model latrine has 14 units that includes 2 units for people with disability.

Phase I of this project was completed in June 2020 where 4 model latrines were provisionally handed over to GS Muhoza (Musanze district), GS Catholique (Ruhango district) GS St Michel Mubuga (Karongi dsitrict) and GS Nyakayaga (Gatsibo district). Phase II is expected to be completed by August 2020.

The representatives of concerned districts appreciated the partnership and declared that the model latrines will help the school to keep standard sanitation among students compared to existing latrines and encourage other schools to borrow this model latrines idea. They are also willing to actively participate in a proper operation and maintenance of the provided sanitation infrastructures, jointly with the beneficiary schools.

Principle of GS Muhoza I Musanze, Mr.Mbonigaba Martin said “These model latrines have come in handy and will greatly help to keep hygiene among the students. We also like to thank WASAC and Musanze District for this donation.”

Mr. Xavier Rwibasira, coordinator of Single Projects Implementation Unity at WASAC, recommended other schools to visit those latrines for their construction. He added “This project was a success in the sanitation sector and we have the idea that these latrines would serve as models to future latrines to be constructed at schools and public institutions. We would be delighted if other schools and public institutions learn from these model latrines for future reference or even improve this version.”

This project was the first of its kind to be initiated by wasac to support and promote sanitation in various schools where the first phase cost 187,205,471 Frw and the second phase will cost 568,557,724 Frw expected to end by August 2020 right about the same time Schools will reopen in Rwanda. The beneficiaries of the second phase are GS.Mata in Muhanga, GS.Gisagara, GS.Murama in Nyaruguru, GS.Nyamyumba in Rutsiro, TTC Mwezi in Nyamasheke, GS.Muhororo in Ngororero, GS.Ngazo I in Gakenke, GS.Bungwe in Burera, GS.Rubagabaga in Nyagatare and TVET Kagarama in Ngoma.
