Rehabilitation, upgrading and extension of water supply network in Rusizi

Wasac with the help of the African Development bank has managed to design, rehabilitate, upgrade and extend the water supply network in the Districts of Rusizi and Nyamasheke. The network will cover Rusizi city and peri-urban areas of Bweyeye, Bugarama, Gikundamvura, Nyakabuye, Butare, Muvugangoma, Nyamasheke and Muvugangoma.

All together the project will cover 14 sectors having 120,000 beneficiaries in this part of western province.

Mwoya water Treatment construction activities are ongoing and once it’s completed it will be producing 3000m3 per day that will be distributed to the various water reservoirs.

The project will build 47 water reservoirs, water pipelines of 222km, 13 water kiosks, 166 public taps and also help to connect 740 households (Pro-poor water connections).

Apart from help from residents of this area to access clean water other have managed to start up small business ventures that will help them improve on their standards of living where some people have opened up shops at the various water kiosk that were constructed.

This initiative was greatly welcomed by the district authorities and they pledged to support wasac in the extraction of this project in their area. The project has also provided employment opportunities to the local people who are working on the various construction sites. Gasigwa Christopher aged 65 years says “I welcome this project with open arms l was able to be compensated for my land where the water pipelines passed plus a water kiosk was also build in my land and am told l will be the one to manage it so am very happy that we are going to receive clean water just right next to my door step.”
