On 14thApril 2022, the management and employees of Water Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) and Rwanda Energy Group (REG) commemorated 173 former ELECTROGAZ Staff victims of the Genocide against Tutsis, an event that took place at the Memorial located at REG Headquarters in Kigali City.
The commemoration started with laying a wreath at this memorial built at REG Headquarters, where families and friends of the victims, REG and WASAC partners who also attended the event took time to remember and honor the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
Honarable Kalisa Evariste, a former ELECTROGAZ employee for 20 years who spoke on behalf of the families of the victims said that the Genocide was planned for a long time that is the reason why it took many people. “There were signs that the genocide is being prepared which included discrimination, dehumanisation, violations of human rights and extremism etc. “Honarable Kalisa said
He thanked WASAC and REG for the support they give to survivors and orphans of those who lost their lives in genocide. In her remarks, Gisele UMUHUMUZA, the Ag. Chef Executive Officer of WASAC thanked survivors for their braveness, and encouraged WASAC and REG employees to maintain peace and unity. “It was sad to see people killing the former ELETROGAZ employees who provided them with water and Electricity”, she said.
She also comforted families of the victims, and ensured that WASAC and REG will continue supporting them. Uwase Patricie, Hon. State Minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure who was the Guest of Honor said that rememberance is a time to honor the victims of the genocide, to heal the wounds of the survivors and to confort them .
“Genocide survivors still need our help, I encourage everyone to support them, so that they could feel loved especially in this difficult period.” Uwase said
Uwase called upon the event participants and the general public to join efforts in combatting genocide ideology and denial which is seen through social media platforms in different parts of the world.
REG and WASAC each year provide electricity and clean water for some villages of survivors of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
