Improved Water Access Transforms Lives in Nyamagabe

The reinforcement and upgrade of the Mabende–Rwufe Water Supply System, which includes 95.62 kilometres of pipelines, has significantly improved access to clean, safe, and reliable water for communities in Kitabi, Tare, Kibirizi, and Uwinkingi sectors. The upgraded system also benefits residents of Kigeme Refugee Camp and surrounding schools, helping to address long-standing water shortages while enhancing public health and the quality of life for thousands of people.

The project forms part of the Stunting Prevention and Reduction Project (SPRP), funded by the World Bank through the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC). It is one of several initiatives being implemented by WASAC Group to strengthen water infrastructure and increase access to clean water in different districts across the country. The rehabilitation and reinforcement works included the construction of 28 water reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 1,520 cubic meters, 83 public water points and one pumping station. These improvements have enhanced the reliability and sustainability of water supply services for communities and different institutions.

Residents Welcome the Improved Water Supply

Residents across the project coverage area say the upgraded water supply system has transformed their daily lives by bringing clean, safe water closer to their homes. One of them is Singayirimana Veneranda, a resident of Bivumu Village, Kaganza Cell, Tare Sector, who shared: "Before this project, it could take us up to three hours to fetch water, and some families had to pay as much as Frw 200 for a single jerrican. Today, we have clean, safe water close to our homes. The improved water supply has enhanced hygiene, saved us time, and eased the daily burden on our families. We are grateful to WASAC Group for transforming our lives." 

Mukarusine Marie Rose, a resident of Kimicanga Village, Kaganza Cell, Tare Sector, echoed the same sentiment, saying: "This project has transformed our lives. We now have clean, sufficient water close to our homes, and many families are applying for household water connections. We sincerely thank everyone who made this possible, especially His Excellency President Paul Kagame, for prioritizing improved access to water and improving the living conditions of Rwandans."

Improved Access to Safe Water Boosts Community Development

AYINKAMIYE Donatha, Executive Secretary of Tare Sector, commended WASAC Group for improving access to safe water in Nyamagabe District, particularly in Tare Sector. She said: "Our residents now enjoy a reliable and continuous water supply. Areas that previously depended on water rationing have consistent access to water, improving household livelihoods and supporting economic activities such as agriculture, livestock farming, and construction. Schools are also connected to the water network, while better hygiene and sanitation are helping reduce waterborne diseases."

The reinforcement and upgrade of Mabende–Rwufe Water Supply System began in June 2024 and was completed in May 2026. Beyond increasing water availability, the project is expected to improve public health, strengthen sanitation services, save families valuable time previously spent collecting water, and support socio-economic development. The completion of the project reflects WASAC Group's continued commitment to expanding access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water services, contributing to Rwanda's national goal of ensuring universal access to clean water and improved sanitation.
