New 95.62 km Water Network to Transform Access for over 48,000 Nyamagabe Residents
The system known as Mabende–Rwufe covers 95.62 km of pipelines and will significantly increase access to clean water across the sectors of Kitabi, Tare, Kibirizi, and Uwinkingi. This initiative is part of a broader effort to rehabilitate and reinforce water supply systems in different districts, under the Stunting Prevention and Reduction Project (SPRP), funded by the World Bank through the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).
The reinforcement and upgrade of Mabende-Rwufe system includes the construction of 28 reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 1,520 m³, 83 water points, 1 pumping station, new and reinforced pipelines collecting water from multiple sources.
As part of the ongoing works, communities in Tare Sector have already begun receiving water following the extension of the existing network, which also enabled the connection of Kigusa Primary School.

Project Receives Warm Reception from the Community
Local residents say the new water points have transformed daily life. “Our children no longer travel long distances or spend hours looking for water because we have a public tap near our homes,” said Nyirakundimana Evanice, who manages one of the newly constructed water points in Kigusa Village, Gatovu Cell. “It is now easy for parents to get water, and our children no longer miss classes. Hygiene has improved. We are grateful to President Kagame for this support.”
Her neighbor, Gakunde Alphonse, shared a similar experience, recalling how they used to walk nearly 3 km to fetch water from natural springs in the valley.
“We are glad and thankful to everyone who contributed to this water supply system. We also hope to connect water directly to our homes,” he added.
The reinforcement and upgrade of the new system began in June 2024 and is scheduled for completion in December 2025. Once finalized, the project will significantly boost water availability, improve sanitation, and reduce the time families were spending searching for water.
