U.S.-Funded Isoko y’Ubuzima Project Leaves Lasting Legacy in Rwanda’s WASH Sector
Implemented from July 2021, the project has played a transformative role in strengthening Rwanda's WASH sector by expanding access to safe, reliable and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services across 15 districts. Led by Water For People in partnership with IRC, CARE International, VEI and AEE, Isoko y'Ubuzima brought together government institutions, local authorities, private sector actors and communities to build resilient WASH systems and improve service delivery throughout the country.
Over the past five years, the project focused on strengthening decentralized governance, improving rural water service delivery, promoting market-based sanitation solutions and increasing access to sanitation and hygiene products and services. It also supported public health preparedness through the development of water and sanitation response plans for disease outbreaks, including Marburg Virus Disease (MVD).
The project recorded significant achievements. A total of 143,329 people gained access to basic drinking water services, while 225,916 people benefited from improved quality of existing water services. In addition, 119,262 people gained access to basic sanitation services, and approximately USD 8.15 million was leveraged through engineering designs and investment plans for future sector investments.
Officiating the event, Director General in charge of Water and Sanitation at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Gemma Maniraruta, expressed appreciation to the United States Government and implementing partners for their contribution to Rwanda's development.
"The achievements registered under Isoko y'Ubuzima have significantly improved the lives of many Rwandans through increased access to clean water and improved sanitation services. The Government of Rwanda, through MININFRA and WASAC Group, remains committed to sustaining and building on these achievements to ensure lasting impact," she said.
Speaking during the ceremony, Eugene Dusingizumuremyi, Country Director for Water For People in Rwanda, praised the collaboration among stakeholders that contributed to the project's success.
"The success of Isoko y'Ubuzima demonstrates the power of partnerships. The strong collaboration between the Government of Rwanda, the United States Government, implementing partners and communities has enabled us to deliver sustainable and inclusive WASH services that improve public health and transform lives," he said.
Although the project has officially come to an end, stakeholders emphasized that its legacy will endure through strengthened institutions, improved service delivery systems and thousands of Rwandans who now enjoy better access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.
