WASAC Group Brings Clean Water to Over 15,000 Residents in Ruhango District

Ruhango, 22 June 2026 – Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC Group) has completed the Rehabilitation, Extension and Upgrading of the Nkomero–Kinihira Water Supply System, significantly improving access to clean water for more than 15,000 residents of Kinihira Sector in Ruhango District, as well as public institutions such as schools and health posts.
The Nkomero–Kinihira Water Supply System comprises 80 kilometers of pipelines and has addressed water shortages in the cells of Muyunzwe, Kirwa, Rukina, and Nyakogo in Kinihira Sector. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and extend water supply systems across various districts under the Stunting Prevention and Reduction Project (SPRP), funded by the World Bank through the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).
The system includes the construction of 17 reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 575 m³, 55 public water points, and two pumping stations. Construction works commenced in June 2025 and were completed in March 2026.
Local communities praise the project
Residents of Kinihira Sector have expressed their appreciation for the improved access to clean water, highlighting its positive impact on their daily lives.
"Before, we had to travel long distances, sometimes more than five kilometers in search of water. Vulnerable people could spend up to two hours fetching water, and even then, the water was often unsafe for consumption. Today, we have access to clean water close to our homes through nearby public water points, something we never imagined would become a reality. We are deeply grateful to the visionary leadership of President Paul Kagame for prioritizing the needs of communities like ours and ensuring access to clean water," said UNYUZIMFURA Oscar, a water point operator in Nyakogo Cell.
Ahishakiye Grace, a neighbor of Oscar, also expressed her gratitude for the provision of clean water, noting that it is helping to prevent diseases: "The availability of clean water has significantly improved our hygiene and sanitation standards. We now have safe water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, which helps protect our families from waterborne diseases.”
She expressed her appreciation for the positive impact of access to clean water, noting that it has transformed their lives by reducing the time spent fetching water and enabling children to attend school regularly. With a household water connection, she can now access water whenever needed, greatly improving their quality of life. She thanked WASAC Group for enhancing the well-being of residents in Kinihira Sector.

Kinihira Sector Leadership Commends WASAC Group for Expanding Access to Clean Water
NDISHIMYE Benjamin, Executive Secretary of Kinihira Sector, commends WASAC Group for its efforts to expand access to clean water in Kinihira Sector.
"This new water supply system has increased access to clean water to 98% of Kinihira Sector residents. Previously, only one of the sector's six cells had access to clean water. Today, all cells are connected to the water network. Before the project, the sector had only 11 kilometers of water pipelines serving a single cell. We now have 80 kilometers of pipelines, ensuring that all cells are covered and have access to clean water. As a result, residents no longer have to travel long distances in search of water. They can now access clean water within less than 500 meters of their homes," he said.
The Rehabilitation, Extension and Upgrading of the Nkomero–Kinihira Water Supply System is in line with the Government of Rwanda's target to scale up water access in all villages by 2029, as stipulated in the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2).
